Mental Health and National Storytelling Week

Today we explored feelings as part of Mental Health Week. We discussed the different feelings we can have and who we can speak to when we are worried. We talked about how feelings can be comfortable and uncomfortable. We then watched the video ‘Monty the Penguin’. We discussed how the boy in the video was a very good friend to the penguin. He looked out for him, noticed how he was feeling and then helped him change his feelings from sad to happy. We talked about how being a good listener is an important quality for friendship. If we listen to our friends, we can help them when they need it most.

Catholic Schools Week and Grandparents’ Day

This week we celebrated Catholic Schools Week and Grandparents’ Day. We talked about the special people in our lives and the role that grandparents play. Some children talked about how their grandparents look after them, help them with their homework, take them to the park and give them treats. We had fun using our handprints to make a lovely card to give to someone special.

The Feast of the Epiphany

We are learning about the three kings who followed the star to find the baby Jesus. We talked about the gifts they brought of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh and how the three kings are sometimes referred to as the Magi or the Three Wise Men. We made lovely crowns to celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany.

Advent

During Advent, we have been learning about the Advent Wreath and the Advent candles. We learnt that the Advent wreath is circular in shape to symbolise that there is no beginning or ending to God’s love. We learnt about the candles that are around the wreath. A new candle is lit each Sunday during Advent and each candle has a special meaning in the lead up to Christmas. We made some candles to represent God as the light of the world.

October is the Month of the Holy Rosary

We looked at rosary beads to show how they can help us to pray the Rosary. The Rosary Beads provide a method of keeping count of the different parts of the Rosary Prayer. The fingers are moved along the beads as the prayers are said. When we pray the Rosary, we think about the things that happened in the life of Jesus and Mary.

The Sacrament of Baptism

We have been learning about the Sacrament of Baptism. As part of our homework, we brought in photos of our Baptism/pictures of communities we belong to. We had fun trying to recognise our friends in the baby photos and enjoyed talking about our Baptism from the stories our parents told us.
